Sabalenka turns Collins to go to US Open Quarterfinals
Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka reached the quarterfinals of the US Open on Monday by defeating Daniel Collins of the United States.
Sixth-ranked Sabalenka won 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and 20 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
The Belarusian, a semifinalist last year, thought she would bid for the tournament when she was due to meet during the match against Collins due to a leg injury.
However, to the dismay of the fans, she returned to the game and prevented the United States from re-embled by a third representative in the quarterfinals of the US Open, as well as Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff.
Sabalenka then faces Czech Karolina Pliskova, who defeated Belarusian Victoria Azarenka.
The Czech, 22nd in the world, won 7-5, 6-7, 6-2 in three hours at The Luis Armstront Stadium.
Aryna Sabalenka and Karolina Pliskova will face each other for a spot in the semifinals next Wednesday.
